Problems in Tibet…
Filed Under Australian Politics, International Politics
It’s good to see Rudd come out and say something on the atrocities currently happening in Tibet. The biggest issue for the people there at the moment is that they are facing the Chinese opposition with no international media or NGO’s to report on what’s going on. The only official reports coming from Lhasa are from the Chinese news agency Xinhua. As from the 16th March China is not allowing any foreign travellers into Tibet and this signals the resurgence of human rights abuse.
There has also been an uprising in Beijing from Tibetan university students. I’ve only seen this covered in the news briefly by ABC Australia. The students held a peaceful sit-in protest with candles.
Although Rudd wont say more than “he urges all parties to exercise restraint” I do believe that we as a nation can do more than that.
The IOC (International Olympic Committee) wont act with their power over the Olympic games in Beijing later this year however the rest of the world owes the residents of Tibet and Greater China to protest against the continuing human abuse that the Communist Chinese government commit.
We’re at a moment in time where actions taken by Olympic competitors to boycott this games, and to be seen in the media making the action will flow on to have a political effect in China.
Furthermore to this Premier Wen Jiabao has accused the Dalai Lama of organising the riots which have taken place in Lhasa. Which is quite proposturous considering that the Dalai Lama is the leader of a peace movement and has forever advocated non-violence and a politics based approach when leading the people of Tibet. The same man who was granted a Nobel Peace prize back in 1989 for his approach on the very issues being debated. The autonomy of Tibet as a country.
