I actually read about this on the train when someone left an MX behind. Uniting Churh Minister, John Evans thinks the Good Friday holiday should be dropped and replaced with a holiday which is respectful of all faiths, he’s suggested reconciliation day. Minister Evans was quoted as saying:

“Good Friday is all about reconiliation between humanity and God through the cross of Christ.”

I agree with Minister Evans, however i would like to see February 13 set as a reconciliation day public holiday. The day when our Australian parliament, government apologised to the Indigenous people of Australia.

I would think it would only show how mature our country is as a multinational community if we drop our faith-specific holidays in place of something with true meaning for all Australian’s.

One Response to “New public holiday, Reconciliation day?”

    I disagree.

We should not be removing any of our current public holidays. In this overworked country of ours, we should in fact have more public holidays.

I agree that some sort of reconciliation day is needed and a suitable date should be determined in consultation with this nations’ original inhabitants. But such a day should not replace the ones we have now, particularly the ones that are of religious or cultural significance.

Like it or not, Easter and Christmas will stay because they hold religious and cultural significance and tradition for the majority of its inhabitants, regardless of whether they attend church regularly or not. Other people from other faiths (with the possible exception of atheism) realise this and are happy just to have a day off.

Not all holidays need to have meaning for everyone. After all, I’m sure Labour Day has less meaning for Liberals than for the ALP and the unions.
