Reporters Without Borders stage Beijing Olympics protest
Filed Under International Politics, Media, Taking Action
Today at the official start of the Beijing Olympics torch rally Reporters Sans Frontières were able to get behind the speaker and hold up a protest flag. The flag consists of five handcuffs in the traditional lay out of the Olympic rings logo.
Here is an excerpt taken from the Reporters Sans Frontières website:
“They are charged with having “shown contempt for national symbols.” By virtue of Article 361 of the Greek Penal Code, they could be sentenced to a year in prison, and have to pay a fine.”
If that wasn’t enough to highlight the recent and ongoing human rights abuse that China pursues in Tibet, when the torch rally got off to a start it was marred with protesters along the torch route.
It’s hard to conceive this wont be a regular occurrence, the route is still scheduled to go through Tibet. There’s no doubt as it passes through each continent there will be a continuing spotlight pointing to China’s abuse of human rights not just in Tibet, but in Greater China.
The IOC was worried that an event like this would occur in Greece and it would seem that all their worries have come true. I do hope RSF and the league of people who are currently protesting about China are out there every day of this torch run.
