Well it would seem very bad, in a recent study according to Greenpeace rising seas and water shortages will displace about 125 million people in India alone.

Climate change will also trigger erratic monsoons and ruin agricultural systems. We’ve already seen the Bureau of Meteorology put out warnings for extreme conditions leading into winter.

According to Vinuta Gopal the climate and energy campaigner in India:

“We cannot wait for the inevitable to happen and hope to adapt to it. We need policies that reduce the risk of destructive climate change, and moves towards development through decarbonisation.”

Perhaps the keyword of the decade, “decarbonisation”. We need to start to put a price on carbon, we need to start making it stand for value. We have two of the worlds largest economies, India and China, representing more than 2 billion people and we need to get them on board.

India and China are experiencing capitalism, spending billions. If we can make climate change somehow have a value then the shift in those economies will change. In time the United States would follow, they never get left behind.

Hopefully since we have the worlds best technology in Australia we can lead the battle on this front. We can show the world what it means to be carbon neutral or even carbon negative. I hope Prime Minister Rudd sees how important this issue is and becomes one of the leaders of this debate.
