In what appears to be a disturbing trend in the polar regions, a chunk of ice shelf measuring 41 by 2.4 kilometres has broken apart from the Antarctic Wilikins Ice Shelf. This has been attributed to global warming, the movement of ice has already led to the disintegration of 414 square kilometres of polar ice.
Scientists already know that by mid-century the ice in the Arctic will be gone but now we see the effects on the Antarctic.
In the past fifty years the western Antarctic peninsula has had a temperature increase of 0.5 degrees. This may not sound like much however the effects of climate change will first take place at the poles and then the effect of melting ice will raise see levels. This scientists predict this will create climate change refugees, I’ve blogged earlier this month where it’s estimated in India alone this will produce an estimated 125 million refugees.
According to scientists calculations at the present level of sea rise of three millimetres per year ocean levels could rise by 1.4 metres by the end of the century.
