Prime Minister Rudd today announced that he’s setting off on a 17 day global tour which will see him meet with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, United State President George W Bush, and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Prime Minister Rudd is quoted in media as saying:

“The Government believes the maintenance of global economic and financial stability is fundamental to Australia’s future, and therefore should command the full resources of government as a first priority.”

“The challenge this presents to Australian policy-makers of the future is acute.”

“Australia today lives in an increasingly joined-up world. If Australia fails to engage with the global economic, security and environmental challenges, we will simultaneously fail to deal with their impact on our own country.”

“That means in order to advance Australia’s interests at home, we must increasingly be engaged with other nations in responding to the challenges to those interests abroad. Foreign policy, foreign economic policy and national security policy must increasingly be seen as the natural expression and extension of the nation’s domestic policy interests – not as some sort of policy exotica removed from the Australian mainstream, but as part and parcel of the interests of main-street Australia.”

“The challenges Australia faces will require us to be more internationally active, not less.”

In what appears to be the economically conservative that Howard never was Rudd shows true leadership skills in his approach on this issue when it’s looking even more likely that the US will drag us along into their recession along with many other countries.

Hopefully when he visits China he can discuss the human rights abuse and side Australia more economically with China which is not linked greatly to the US economy.

If Australia can align more with China it could possibly prop up our economy and stop us following the US subprime mortgage crisis which is leading them into recession.

Rudd criticised the former government lead by John Howard for not engaging enough with international bodies. John Howard saw himself as leading Australia’s economy to get out of debt when really he was riding the back of the resources boom. I don’t think Howard did enough internationally economically, instead he just bent over for the US and did what they wanted.

In a show of true leadership Rudd will do his tour and come back a man who is known to the world and in control of the situation. Opposition leader Brendan Nelson has come out in attack of Rudd’s tour in saying he should be concentrating on the upcoming budget. Nelson also attacked the planned tour route in saying he should be visiting Japan and discussing whaling. I find this a real joke when during the last 11 Howard years not once did the Liberal government ever speak against the whaling of Japan and i believe if Nelson was leader neither would his government.

In this latest move from the opposition I wouldn’t be surprise if it plunges them back into single figure popularity. It’s more than likely Kevin07 will be putting Nelson07% once again.

Rudd07 is now Daddy Rudd. That’s his new nickname as Tracey Hutchison has written on the Syd Morning Herald website.

It is great the Rudd is promoting Australia back as an economic power, and a global citizen.

Forget about whaling with Japan, I think it’s okay to eat whales that are not endangered. Remember it’s about choice, what makes eating chicken any more special than eating whales?

As for the Liberal Party,,,,, welll….

Nelson needs to be dragged to the trash icon.
