Sydney water bills to rise $203
Filed Under Australian Politics, Climate Change, Local Council, State Government
Sydney wants a desalination plant, the cost? $203 per year for each household according to Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).
The cost that isn’t factored in is the cost to the environment. Desalination plants put out toxic chemicals as waste which is discharged into the ocean and take enormous energy supplies which will be sourced from coal fired power stations.
If you take the same amount of money and put that into residential water tanks and grey water systems, including in farming and manufacturing it can be done with less money and obtain more water.
I recently blogged about the planned Victorian desalination plant where the Bass Coast Shire Counci has stopped talking to the State government because of a lack of transparancy and consultation with the local community.
Australia needs to realise that we’re a hot country in a world that’s getting hotter. We can’t go the route of desalination plants as the energy they use comes from dirty coal which makes the world even hotter. It’s simple to understand yet our governments don’t seem to be getting the message.
There is no clean coal, there is no safe CCS (carbon capture and storage), there is clean energy in wind and solar, and we can reduce our energy needs. We can be leaders on this front and show the world how we can have economic benefits in leading with clean energy , dispersed water capture technology, and an economic carbon credit scheme.
