The Tasmanian Greens are asked gaming operators to switch off their poker machines during Earth Hour this weekend. The idea behind Earth Hour which originally started in NSW and has now spread globally is to switch off your lights for one hour at 8pm this Saturday.

The Greens have gone one step further in linking Earth Hour to gambling addiction. It’s widely known from research that gambling habits can ruin people financially, drive people to alcoholism and destroy families.

The Greens spokesperson for gaming Kim Booth says:

“It’d be a great example that could be shown to the community by turning out the flashing lights and sounds that pokies generate that are effectively totally useless and wasters of energy as causing a lot of social harm.

So it’ll give people, the poor souls who are stuck in the pokie machine dens an opportunity to reflect in the darkness.”

I think it would be even better if this spread nation wide with every gaming venue turning off their machines for one hour. Perhaps Tattersalls should get in on it and start acting like a corporation that cares for our communities welfare.

Of course Western Australian need not come in, they don’t have pokies are show that a government not reaping the financial benefits of gambling habits can still be stable economically
