Henry the sea lion’s popularity soars whilst 300,000+ seals are slaughtered in Canada
Filed Under Animal Rights, Animals, Taking Action
The popularity of a single sea lion on an Adelaide beach is unheard of whilst 300,000+ seals are killed in the annual Canadian seal hunt.
In a process which has been seen as cruel the only solution that PETA and the Humane Society can see is to pre-emptively kill the entire population of 6.3 Canadian harp seals using humane euthanasia to save all of these animals from inhumane clubbing and other cruel practices. PETA has offered euthanasia drugs, helicopters and camera people to document this unseen act to halt cruelty on these innocent animals.
Quoting the Humane Society:
Is the Seal Hunt Cruel?
Yes. In 2001, a report by an independent team of veterinarians who studied the hunt concluded that governmental regulations regarding humane killing were neither being respected nor enforced, and that the seal hunt failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards. Shockingly, the veterinarians found that in 42 percent of the cases they studied, the seals had likely been skinned alive while conscious.
Parliamentarians, journalists, and scientists who observe Canada’s commercial seal hunt each year continue to report unacceptable levels of cruelty, including sealers dragging conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, shooting seals and leaving them to suffer in agony, stockpiling dead and dying animals, and even skinning seals alive.
There are leaders out there, the Humane Society, Sea Shepherd, and many other environmentalist groups which have been trying to thwart the cruel acts of the seal fishermen. These groups continually get stopped and most recently rammed by the Canadian Coast Guard.
In a global effort to stop this cruelty in the last three years more than one million seal’s have been slaughtered. It’s difficult to see how people may care for one single sea lion on an Adelaide beach and ignore the slaughter going on in Canada.
If you care for the sea lion in Adelaide then stand-up and take action on the seal slaughter taking place in Canada.
