In what I feel will be the first of many departures former Liberal front-bencher Peter McGauran has indicated he will retire from politics. McGuaran the member for Gippsland standing for the Nationals party has said he’ll leave his 25 year career in politics to pursue a career in the thoroughbred racing industry.
This departure comes days after Labor front-bencher Anthony Albanese predicted McGuaran’s retirement. However not without controversy McGuaran is set to follow-up a career in an area of industry he presided over as a former minister during the Howard government.
This will most likely be the first in a wave of retirements from parliament for Liberal/National coalition departures. Next set to leave will likely see Peter Costello, Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile giving by-elections to take place in the seats of Gippsland, Higgins, Mayo and Lyne.
These by-elections by former government ministers are set to cost the tax-payers millions in costs and I believe it’s unfair for tax-payers to front these costs. These predicted departures from former ministers is simply because these members of parliament don’t want to pursue their parliamentary careers as members of the opposition.
