politics, art, vegan, Melbourne, life, and just stuff…

I was inspired to write this from a piece shown on the SBS television show Dateline last week, where the journo delved into a scheme where all school children aged to 13 must be given a cooked lunch while at school.

This program was initiated in 2001 after a supreme court decision that made it compulsory for all states in India to provide the lunch. The area they investigated was the state karnataka where the enrolment rate of the school in question had doubled and the total number of students that were truant had been reduced from 1 million students to 70 thousand. Previously these 930 thousand students were sent off to work by their parents. This has also led to a large reduction in the number of children severely malnourished.

Add to this the maternity leave act which gives a woman up to twelve weeks leave and India and it shows the true sense of community that India feels.

If you want to check out this inspiring program you can review snippets of the show from the SBS website.
